What I'm Enjoying Most About "The Book Thief"

The Book Thief  overall is a novel that revolves around the very heavy topic of war and death, specifically World War II and the Holocaust. What I enjoy most is the interjecting light-hearted stories about Liesel and her friends. These stories break up the heavy subject matter of the war and help the reader to view the war more from a child's perspective. Some particular examples of this include stories of Liesel and the neighborhood kids playing soccer in the street, the boy imitating Jessie Owens, the olympic track star, and Liesel's friend tagging along while she delivers the clothes on her mother's laundry route. Other more hard-hitting stories of her childhood and human relations in general, include the story about the boy she fought in school for bullying her about her reading skills, and Liesel helping him at the rally for Hitler's birthday when he was injured.
These stories and many more add a realness to the plot line, as the war continues the reader is able to more clearly see it through a child's perspective.
